The fruit mixer is a very popular juice and is available in most of the fruit shops in Madurai. I vividly remember having this in a shop near Periyar bus stand. A small shop, which is always crowded with people irrespective of the weather. Amma will take us there after finishing all our shopping for hours in the hot sun. I always wanted to taste the fruit mixer but being a teenager I was super inhibited to drink the pulpy juice in public. Though many friends praised this, I have never tried it. The shop is not like a cafeteria, it is just a roadside shop, that makes amazing juices. So standing in the crowd and having pulpy juice was never attempted. Later when I visited a few years after my marriage, I wanted to try this fruit mixer in that shop. It was truly amazing and I loved it. My sister was telling me to blog about this recipe for the past 4-5 years. Recently my very good friend, who lives in Madurai took an effort to go to the shop and find out the ingredients in this recipe. The shopkeeper anna was too good, he shared the whole recipe. I tried it at home yesterday and the very first sip flashed back a lot of memories. Do give this a try this summer season and enjoy. For those who want to know the exact location of the shop, it is a small shop near Periyar bus stand, just at the start of the Dindugal road, named Indian juice. In a bowl add the banana. Mash this well using a fork. Do not puree this in a mixie.
In a mixie jar add the papaya cubes and add ½ cup of water. Make this into a fine puree.
Add this to the bowl. Now add the apple, mango, pineapple (I didn’t add), and grapes. Add nanari syrup, if you do not have it skip it. You can add 1 tbsp of sugar if needed. Now add in the ice cubes.
Mix well. Pour this into the serving glass. This will be slightly thick and not like regular juice. You need to pour this into the glass using a ladle.
Enjoy a Madurai-style fruit mixer.
