I love the texture of pears. They’re very distinct: slightly gritty but in a good way. It’s totally unlike eating any other fruit. When you eat this butter, you’ll feel both the smooth and grainy texture on your tongue. I bought these pears while visiting my brother in NYC. He took me to the farmer’s market and when I saw these beautiful bosc pears, I knew I had to buy them. I patiently waited for these pears to ripen on my countertop before making this butter. The great thing about fruit butter is its simplicity. Start with cutting and peeling your fruit. Chop it up and put it – along with some optional flavorings – into your crock pot. I cooked this pear butter on low for about 9 hours and then pureed the fruit and cooked it for another six or so hours. That helped reduce my pear butter to my desired thickness. If you want a thick pear butter, you’ll need to add sugar. My pears were so sweet and ripe that I decided not to. If you’re interested in making a very thick, sweet and tart fruit butter, try my apple butter recipe. I think pears are great in both sweet and savory dishes. Use this pear butter as a topping for some (paleo) approved ice cream or pie. If you’re in the mood for something savory, use the butter on top of some fish or as a dressing for salad. Fruit butter also makes wonderful gifts, so if you have a little extra then share with a friend. Like this recipe? Pin it to your favorite Pinterest board now so you will remember to make it later!
