This festival Thiruvadirai is favored for Lord Shiva, on the day of Thiruvadirai star in Marghazhi (November-December)and is a festival of great importance. Thiruvadirai kali is an offering to Lord Natraja on the occasion of Arudra dharshan. We make Kali on this day along with the Thiruvathirai Kootu | Thalagam or 7 kari kootu. My mom and grandmother make delicious kali but somehow during my childhood, I never liked it. Later after marriage, I developed an interest in this. But to date, I don’t like the combo of sweet kali and the savory kootu. Traditionally Thiruvadirai kali is made in a brass uruli, called Vengala panai in Tamil. But now due to time constraints, we are making it in a pressure cooker. Trust me, this recipe is a no-fail thiruvadirai kali recipe. You can check out

Filter the impurities and add them to the cooker.Add 2.5 cups of water. Now add ½ tsp cardamom powder, 2 tbsp coconut, and 1 tsp ghee.Adding ghee at this stage will give softness to the kali after it is cooked.
Once this comes to a rolling boil, simmer the flame and add rice dal mixture.Mix well without lumps.
Cover the cooker and cook for 2 whistles.Once the pressure subsides open the cooker.Add 2 tsp ghee and mix well.
